Dry Needling
Dry needling and Electro Dry needling
What is dry needling?
Dry needling is a form of therapy in which fine needles are inserted into myofascial trigger points (painful knots in muscles), tendons, ligaments, or near nerves in order to stimulate a healing response in painful musculoskeletal conditions.
Dry Needling induces an analgesic effect, through Neuronal Mechanisms that are associated with the Peripheral Nervous System and the Central Nervous System. These Neuronal Mechanisms stimulate the release of opioids, Serotonin, Dopamine, and Noradrenalin; among other Bioactive Substances. The approach is based on Western Anatomical and Neurophysiological Principles.
The Advantages of using Dry Needling include a reduction in local, referred or wide-spread pain, restoration of Muscle activation and an improved Range of motion. The advantages also extend to normalizing the Chemical environment of Active Myofascial Trigger Points.
The Benefits of Dry Needling include:
- Reducing Pain through increased Analgesic Effect
- Reducing Muscle Tension
- Improving Joint Mobility
- Eliminating Trigger Points
- Restoring Muscle Strength
- Reducing Inflamed Soft Tissue (following acute injuries)
What types of needles are used?
Single-use, disposable needles are used at Shiva Physical Therapy.
What is Electro Dry Needling?
Electro Dry Needling is a modified form of dry needling which utilizes an electro-stimulation unit connected via cables to fine filament needles. The combination of dry needling with electro-stimulation often prolongs the pain relief effect by blocking nerve pathways and preventing pain signals from travelling to the brain.
The frequency, intensity and mode of stimulation will vary depending on the reason for the treatment.
Low Frequency/ High Intensity stimulation will typically be used with a frequency of 10Hz during Electro Stimulation, which is optimal for targeting the motor fibers that are responsible for producing long term pain relief.
During your Electro Dry Needling treatment with Elite Body Performance Bodywork Therapy, you may experience twitching, contractions, numbness or tingling in the area that is being treated. The frequency and intensity are consistently monitored to avoid pain or discomfort. This method of treatment often results in relaxation and pain relief.
Electro Dry Needling is commonly used to treat Acute and Chronic Conditions.

Here at Shiva Physical Therapy, our goal is to get patients back to a pain free and fulfilling life. We are able to integrate the latest research and implement it into clinical practice by utilizing ultrasound and dry needling. It is one of the many ways that sets us apart from other clinics and proves that we are dedicated in giving each patient the best care possible.
